此經典的Stern-Gerlach實驗揭開了原子之自旋性質。古典物理中沒有對應量的自旋(spin)是屬於一種內禀角動量(註)。通常我們說一個已測量的z分量自旋，意味著此自旋代表自旋朝上(spin-up)或自旋朝下(spin-down)的其中一個量。
